SUMMER MINORITY PROGRAM IN GEOLOGY Geology of Colorado Plateau
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at UNO is offering 10-15 Minority High School students an opportunity to participate in an approximately 2-week field-laboratory geology program. The program will include lectures-laboratory sessions at UNO plus a 10 day field trip to the NATIONAL PARKS OF SOUTHERN UTAH. The field excursion will include: ARCHES, CANYONLANDS, CAPITOL REEF, BRYCE CANYON, AND ZION NATIONAL PARKS. Students will be introduced to some basic principles of scientific exploration and thought as well as to some basic geologic concepts while traveling through one of the most spectacular regions of North America. Their exploration will include a mixture of walks, hikes drives, and outdoor discussion all conducted in Nature's grand classroom on the Colorado Plateau. Students say they never forget the things they learn about geoscience, the world around them, and themselves on this trip. There will also be some time for fun. Alumni of this trip still talk about the traditional snowball fight up on Brianhead and the wet walk up the river through the lower reaches of the Virgin River Narrows in Zion. Students camp out during the trip but are never to far from comforts such as showers. ELIGIBILITY 1. Open to Minority Students - Native Americans, African Americans, Spanish Speaking Americans, or other underrepresented groups. 2. You must be a graduating senior or entering your junior or senior year in the Fall of 2008. 3. You must be recommended by your high school counselor, science teacher, or principal. 4. After an initial review of the applications, some students will be selected for follow-up interviews at UNO prior to selecting the final participants for the trip. CLASSES Tentatively, the program will begin Monday, June 16, 2008. Lecture and laboratory sessions will be conducted on the UNO campus June 16 through 17. On June 18 we will fly to Las Vegas, Nevada or Salt Lake City, Utah and return to New Orleans June 27. COST Participants will not have to pay any fees for the field trip or laboratory portion of the trip. All participants will have their lodging, camping fees and meals paid by the program. In addition, each student will receive a stipend for participation. APPLICATION Print application forms from this site or contact your high school counselor or science teacher for application forms. A written recomendation and essay is required.
